English Mastiff Rescue Helps Build Families
Bringing home a 200 pound dog might not sound like something most people would want to get involved with. Participating in an English mastiff rescue, however, could be one of the most rewarding experiences of your life. These gentle giants are often mistaken or misread because of their large size. Many people see these dogs and are immediately intimidated. They can stand about 2 1/2 – 3 feet tall at the shoulder and they can weigh as much as 250 pounds. When you read those numbers, it is easy to understand why some people are a bit nervous around them. The truth, though, is that these dogs are one of the most gentle and playful breeds around.
Because of their large size and the amount of work that goes into taking care of them, the English mastiff is often abandoned or surrendered to a shelter. Being part of an English mastiff rescue group will help you learn more about this breed. These dogs are very playful and love to exercise. They are wonderful around kids and seem to know just how delicate they have to be around the little tykes. At the same time, once they are accepted into a family and learn to love their owners, these dogs can be very protective. This can give a family a sense of security when they are out walking or going to the park. The English Mastiff will not be aggressive toward other people or dogs, but they will take a defensive position if they feel their family is in any danger. At that point, they can be very intimidating.
The protective nature of these dogs can be traced back to their history in England when they served as guard dogs and members of the British Army.
Finding a local English mastiff rescue in your area could be a challenge depending on where you live. This is not one of the more popular breeds of dogs, so the number available for adoption is lower than a breed like the Labrador Retriever. That doesn’t mean that these dogs don’t need to find a good home though. They need the love and support to have a great life just like any other dog would.
Whenever you are deciding to add a dog to your family, it is important to consider if your lifestyle is a good fit for the dog. When considering an English mastiff rescue, just keep in mind that these dogs need space, exercise and a family that will provide them with everything they need. In turn, you will get a loyal companion for life.
